In 1542, when communion wine was accidentally spilled at St. Mary’s in Wittenberg, Martin Luther and Rev. Bugenhagen rushed forward, wept, cried out, “O God help,” and even licked up the spilled wine from the rail.To many modern Christians, that sounds extreme. But perhaps that reaction reveals something uncomfortable. Maybe the problem is not Luther. Maybe the problem is us.If this account strikes us as excessive, does it reveal that we no longer truly understand—or perhaps no longer truly believe—the real presence of Christ in the Holy Supper?

We ask for God’s kingdom to come among us. Where you find the kingdom, there you find the King (Jesus). Where you find the King (Jesus), there you find the kingdom. We ask that He would give us His Holy Spirit to believe His Word. An earthly kingdom is found by the work of its people and by force. God’s kingdom is found by the work of God in Christ and by His grace. His kingdom is seen now by the Word, Baptism, and the Lord’s Supper. We anticipate beholding the kingdom that is yet to come, that we may keep our focus on what truly matters in this life!

“Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” Peter’s reaction to a miraculous catch of fish is more fearful than joyful in the presence Jesus’ holiness. In final episode of The Magnificent 37, we examine three miracles involving the disciples’ work and witness: the initial calling of the fishermen in Luke 5, the post-resurrection catch in John 21 that restores Peter, and the healing of Malchus’ ear in Gethsemane. These signs reveal a Savior who provides abundantly for His Church, restores the fallen to service, and extends mercy even to His enemies in the hour of darkness.

The Law isn’t just for the unconverted or the guy next to you in the pew. It’s for you, the Christian, too. But why? Why is the Law still preached to those who are in Christ. Isn’t the Gospel enough? The answer is simple: the old Adam hasn’t been reformed—he has to be drowned daily. And for that, you need the Law to expose the sin that still clings, so that you can be driven again and again to Jesus. Now, we’re not talking about rummaging around in your feelings. That is not maturity. Instead, mature Christians learn to use the Law rightly - as a mirror to see the truth. But keep in mind, they don’t examine themselves to condemn themselves, but to confess what is wrong—and let Christ deal with it. Harrison Goodman serves as the Executive Director of Mission and Theology for Higher Things.  He’s a husband, a father, a pastor, and an elder millennial for better but mostly for worse.  He’s known online by literally 10s of people for talking too fast and spending the first half of his life on the secular side of Judaism.  Fortunately, as college is often seen as a time of experimentation, he was baptized at the age of 19 through campus ministry.  While it caused a rift at home, the Lutheran faith has been a comfort to him ever since.
