We ask for God’s kingdom to come among us. Where you find the kingdom, there you find the King (Jesus). Where you find the King (Jesus), there you find the kingdom. We ask that He would give us His Holy Spirit to believe His Word. An earthly kingdom is found by the work of its people and by force. God’s kingdom is found by the work of God in Christ and by His grace. His kingdom is seen now by the Word, Baptism, and the Lord’s Supper. We anticipate beholding the kingdom that is yet to come, that we may keep our focus on what truly matters in this life!

Thy Strong Word - The Great Catch

Feb 5, 2026

“Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” Peter’s reaction to a miraculous catch of fish is more fearful than joyful in the presence Jesus’ holiness. In final episode of The Magnificent 37, we examine three miracles involving the disciples’ work and witness: the initial calling of the fishermen in Luke 5, the post-resurrection catch in John 21 that restores Peter, and the healing of Malchus’ ear in Gethsemane. These signs reveal a Savior who provides abundantly for His Church, restores the fallen to service, and extends mercy even to His enemies in the hour of darkness.
The Rev. Dr. Matthew Richard, pastor of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Minot, ND, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study Luke 5:1–11, John 21:1–14, and Luke 22:50–51.

In Luke 7, the sinful woman was forgiven by faith and her works flowed by His grace. It is clear that we are unable to fulfill the Law and all fall short of His glory. Our disposition is completely broken and as we receive a clear conscience through forgiveness by the blood of Christ, works of love naturally spring up by the Holy Spirit’s help (Galatians 5:22-23). We are reminded that a good tree bears good fruit. For Christ’s sake, we are made a good tree, and our good God bears good fruit for the sake of love for others. “Awake, O sleeper, rise from death, And Christ shall give you light; So learn His love, its length and breadth, its fullness, depth, and height.” LSB #697, st. 1

The Rev. Dr. Matt Richard, pastor of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Minot, SD, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe for Free Text Friday.
In the paradise of Eden, Adam and Eve enjoyed an idyllic existence, at peace with God, nature, themselves, and each another. But this blissful harmony was shattered by their sin and rebellion which led to death, giving rise to guilt and fear that have enslaved mankind ever since. How does Christ’s redemption liberate us from this bondage, transforming us from slaves of fear into God’s own children? This episode compares and contrasts the life of spiritual slavery with the joyful freedom experienced as a baptized child of God.
Thy Strong Word, hosted by Rev. Dr. Phil Booe, pastor of St. John Lutheran Church of Luverne, MN, reveals the light of our salvation in Christ through study of God’s Word, breaking our darkness with His redeeming light. Each weekday, two pastors fix our eyes on Jesus by considering Holy Scripture, verse by verse, in order to be strengthened in the Word and be equipped to faithfully serve in our daily vocations.

The Rev. Dr. Matthew Richard, pastor of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Minot, ND, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study Acts 7:54-8:3.
Confronted with Stephen’s impassioned defense, the members of the Sanhedrin respond with rage, and the first martyrdom in the Church’s history tragically unfolds. Amid this profound turmoil, Stephen looks to the heavens and receives a vision of divine reassurance, even as earthly events take a brutal turn. Saul, who would become St. Paul, is present giving approval to Stephen’s execution. The event sets the stage for a widespread persecution that will scatter the believers—and inadvertently further the spread of the Gospel.
The Book of Acts takes us back to the earliest days of Christianity, unveiling the incredible acts of the apostles and the growth of the early church. Acts offers a firsthand account how the Apostles and Jesus’ disciples respond to his death and resurrection. It makes us witnesses to the beginning of fulfilling Jesus’s command to spread the Gospel from Jerusalem to the ends of the earth. We encounter miracles and wonders, we see the church struggling to organize itself in the absence of Jesus, and we learn of the trials and tribulations the early Christians faced in a world that rejected them.

If the bread and wine are truly the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ AND we receive full forgiveness of sins, life and salvation, how is this even possible and who is even worthy to receive it? The Sacrament of the Altar gives exactly what Jesus says: Forgiveness of sins. The Sacrament of the Altar is for exactly those who Jesus welcomes: sinners. In faith, receive and go in peace!
Rev. Dr. Matthew Richard, pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Minot, ND joins Rev. Brady Finnern to study the How’s and Who’s of the Sacrament of the Altar.

I believe that I cannot believe in Christ by my own reason or strength (I Corinthians 12). The progress of faith is completely a gift of God’s Work so that no one may boast (Ephesians 2:8-9). It is a comfort to know that He calls us, gathers us, enlightens us, makes us holy, and keeps us with Him so that we know the completeness of the Gospel. All Him and not us. We know that we receive the Holy Spirit by the Word & His Sacraments (Acts 2:38-39). These gifts point us away from ourselves and to the hope in the life, death, and the resurrection of Christ so that we confess Jesus as Lord and receive His forgiveness, life, and salvation. Thanks be to God that He gives us faith in Christ and gathers all believers back to Him now and on the Last Day.
Rev. Matthew Richard, pastor of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Minot, ND joins Rev. Brady Finnern to study the 3rd Article of the creed in Luther’s Small Catechism.

On episode TWENTY-EIGHT Let the Bird Fly!, the guys welcome the ever-patient Rev. Dr. Matthew Richard. If you're a regular listener, you may recall that on Episode 26 we tried to discuss Dr. Richard's book with him on that episode, but technology would not cooperate. We are extremely grateful for pastor Richard's patience and understanding; and we're thrilled that we were finally able to get him on the show. We think you'll be pretty happy about it too!
Wade starts us off on this episode discussing Matthew 24:4-14, before getting to the main topic. You may notice that we skip the free-for-all in this one, but we think you'll appreciate that extra time we spend discussing Dr. Richard's recently published book Will the Real Jesus Please Stand Up? Twelve False Christs. In his book, Dr. Richard walks through twelve different false Christs that different people have presented to him throughout his ministry. As Dr. Richard says, each of these could be seen as a type of idol, that seeks to displace the real Jesus. The book is written for a lay audience and is very conducive to a study group setting. Through his narratives and explanations, Dr. Richard provides the reader with an honest account of these various errors, while the same time offering a thoroughly pastoral approach to confronting these false christs.
